tablets, tend to "cap"
on attrition
Ë Therefore, another measure
of a tablet's strength is its friability
Ë Friability test determines ability of tablets
to withstand abrasion during packaging, handling & shipping
Control of tablet friability is important to avoid
Lack elegance & consumer acceptance
Excessive dirt in areas of manufacturing as coating & packaging
Tablet’s weight variation or content uniformity problems
Consists of a plastic chamber divided in to two parts & revolves
at a speed of 25 rpm
Steps of test
10 tablets are dusted, weighed then placed in drum of friabilator which
is
allowed to rotate for 4 minutes or for 100 revolutions
During
each revolution, tablets fall from a distance of 6 inches
to undergo
repeated shocks
Tablets
are then re-dusted & re-weighed & % loss in weight is
calculated to indicate friability
According
to USP, weight loss should not be more than 1%
